Our second wings afield! Andrew and Esther head to Boston and find Buff’s Pub of Newton.
Whenever we travel, we try to grab some wings. Ideally, we find a place with a local reputation. Like our visit to Ray’s Original Buffalo Wings in Omaha, when we found Buff’s Pub of Newton, we knew we had to go. We hopped the Waverly Express bus and 10 minutes later we were there.
You’ll see in our pictures, the facade resembles more of a roadside mall than a pub, but our worries were put to rest when we walked in and heard Wild Horses on the jukebox.
Everything at Buff’s, from the name, to the wing-heavy menu, to the buffalo head hanging on the wall, makes their mission clear: Best wings in Boston. Even the Boston Globe has noticed, writing “Half the bars in town serve wings, but Buff’s Pub in Newton is an undisputed master of the form,” in 2012.
So how were they? Well, wing lovers, you shouldn’t be surprised to hear that they were fantastic. Sure, Boston may conjure thoughts of seafood, clam chowdah, wicket smaht Hahvahd students, and the like. But Buff’s? Buff’s is on our side.
The award winning wings were crispy (though quick to sog up), and the sauce game was strong. Honorable mention to Buff’s Honey Hot wings, which were even written up by Serious Eats. Check out our scores and pics for more, and if you’re in Boston, take it from us: The bus ride to Buff’s is well worth it.
Meat Quality: 8.5/10
Total: 41.5/50 possible points
Notes: The bus ride was totally worth it, no question, but sort of gobsmacked at how few wings joints occupy central Boston.
Notes: The first wing was paradise and had an almost perfect texture. I wish I could have eaten all of my wings immediately after the bartender set them in front of me. Wings 2 and 3 were super good but didn’t have the breathtaking crispiness of their brother, Wing 1.
Price: $6.50 for 6 wings, $10 for 10 wings
Address: 317 Washington Street, Newton, MA 02458
